WHICH FIELD OF STUDY—OUTSIDE OF MUSIC—INFLUENCES YOUR MUSIC-MAKING THE MOST?

Film, visual art, and literature have played a significant role in shaping my musical style. Having grown up in New York City, I am no stranger to the Metropolitan Museum, MoMA, and the American Museum of Natural History.

Nowadays, wherever I travel to perform, I visit their local museums when my schedule allows. For instance, I recently performed in London and was thrilled to have the chance to see the British Museum, the National Gallery, and the Victoria & Albert Museum. I’m delighted that these enriching experiences have helped evoke moods and atmospheres that I can translate into my musical expressions. I also enjoy watching movies. While learning Prokofiev’s No. 7 Sonata, in addition to reading history books, I also watched many war movies and documentaries, which helped me visually grasp the historical context, understand the impact of war on cities and people, and gain insights into the sociology and intensity of combat. I aim to translate these insights into my music so that the audience can ‘see’ and ‘feel’ the depth of emotion and narrative I experienced when performing that piece.

WHAT ENERGIZES YOUR IN LIFE TO KEEP GOING, TO KEEP CREATING?

Quest. I would say I am naturally a very curious, inquisitive, and enthusiastic person. I find great joy in creating and discovering the wonders of the world and the intricacies of human nature. Also, I am so fortunate to have met many people, including my professors, teachers, mentors, members of music organizations, and friends. They have generously and enthusiastically offered me significant support and help. Their belief in me and the sense of belonging they provided have significantly impacted me, strengthening my resolve to move forward.
