Duo Amal’s "ferocity and tenderness" to debut at Portland Piano International with recitals in Portland & Beaverton, October 20 & 22

PORTLAND, OR — Duo Amal, the Israeli-Palestinian piano pair, is set to make their eagerly awaited debut at Portland Piano International (PPI) this October. As part of PPI’s 2024/2025 Main Recital Season, Duo Amal will perform two recitals: October 20 at Portland State University’s Lincoln Performance Hall and October 22 at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton.

Amid global conflict and division, Yaron Kohlberg and Bishara Haroni come together to remind us of the unifying power of music. Duo Amal, meaning "hope" in Arabic, has been praised by Maestro Zubin Mehta, “This duo is not only a sign of friendship between their peoples, but a musical collaboration to enjoy.” Since their debut at the Oslo Opera House in 2008, they’ve graced prestigious stages such as the Kimmel Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Tokyo’s Asahi Hall, even performing at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva.

This "soulful and dynamic" duo (Bermuda Festival) are both accomplished soloists. Kohlberg, a winner of over ten international piano competitions, currently serves as the president of Piano Cleveland, the organization behind the esteemed Cleveland International Piano Competition. Haroni has performed with the London Philharmonic and under the batons of legends like Daniel Barenboim and Zubin Mehta. He also founded Bestival, an international festival celebrating Arab and Jewish music.

Portland Piano International is honored to uphold its legacy of presenting the world’s finest pianists. This October, PPI is proud to offer a program filled with hope and inspiration.

PORTLAND PIANO INTERNATIONAL has presented more than 220 artists in recital and through outreach activities. Some of the greatest pianists in the world of music have played for Portland audiences because of this organization. While pianists have many opportunities to play the concerto repertoire, this is one of only a handful of recital series that remains devoted to the solo piano recital. Portland Piano International is a vital part of Portland's quality cultural life and it has consistently garnered praise from both the local and national media, heralded a "consistently brilliant Piano Recital Series" (Willamette Week) and "one of this city's musical treasures" (The Oregonian).
