New recordings from Daniil Trifonov, Sheku & Isata Kanneh-Mason, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet
You might find our roundup of newly released piano recordings valuable for your listening pleasure. At times it might be hard to sift through the many new recordings released — digital or physical — and pleasantly consume it. In the spirit of focused curation, here are four discs that should put a smile on your dial.
DANIIL TRIFONOV
BACH - THE ART OF LIFE
Now a global superstar, Daniil Trifonov was just getting momentum when he appeared on our series in the 2013/2014 season. Having just won the big Opus Klassik award for “Instrumentalist of the Year”, he’s flying high these days and released a new album calledBach - The Art of Life. It’s a meaningful milestone for an artist who has been catapulted to fame very early in his career, yet as you will hear, his sensitivity to nuance and color are second to none.
SHEKU & ISATA KANNEH-MASON
RACHMANINOFF: 12 ROMANCES, OP. 21: NO. 7, "HOW FAIR THIS SPOT"
This dynamic sister and brother duo have taken the world by storm in recent history. Many of you remember Isata as one of our Rising Stars in the 2017/2018 season. Since then her fame has only increased. She partnered on this album with her brother, cellist Sheku, who is known for his performance at Harry and Megan’s Royal Wedding. This Rachamaninoff single is out now with the album forthcoming.
VLADIMIR ASHKENAZY
J.S. BACH: ENGLISH SUITE NO. 2 IN A MINOR, BWV 807: 8. GIGUE
Even though it’s been announced that he retired from public performances last year, Vladimir Ashkenazy has a new single out with what we imagine to be a forthcoming album at a later date. Here is an interpretive genius at work, performing Bach’s Gigue from the English Suite No. 2.
JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET
CARTE BLANCHE
This album is such a fun, unique expression of Jean-Yves and his fabulous personality. You can just see it come through as he selected a few pieces from the film Pride & Prejudice, Morton Gould’s Boogie Woogie, and schmaltzy tunes like “En avril à Paris” and “I’ll Be Around”. You’ve got to listen. And a fun fact to remember, he was on our 2006/2007 series.
