Dasol Kim’s Beethoven expertise comes to Portland

Dasol Kim

YOU MAY KNOW DASOL KIM AS AN AWARD-WINNING PIANIST FROM SOUTH KOREA. IF YOU DON’T KNOW OF HIM YET, YOU SHOULD! AFTER MR. KIM WON HIS FIRST COMPETITION AT AGE 15, HE MOVED TO GERMANY TO PURSUE HIS CAREER, WHICH HAS INCLUDED MANY COMPETITION WINS AND A DEBUT ALBUM IN 2015.

He has won two Young Concert Artists International Auditions, in 2010 and 2015, and has won first prize in the Epinal International Piano Competition, the Kissinger Klavierolymp, and a Jury Discretionary Award at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition.

Mr. Kim has appeared as soloist with a variety of orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Concerto Budapest, the Belgium National Orchestra, and more.

But perhaps his biggest accomplishment yet is even more interesting. Mr. Kim has been engaged to perform the complete Beethoven piano sonatas in Switzerland and Korea. This is not a feat to be taken lightly — or quickly. Mr. Kim is currently performing the cycle of sonatas over a four-year period.

Hans von Bülow was the first artist to perform the whole 32 sonatas in just one concert cycle, and only a few other pianists have followed suit. What an experience that would be! A variety of other artists have recorded all of Beethoven’s sonatas, and we hope that one day, Mr. Kim will join that list, as well!

Here, you can listen to his rendition of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 8 Op. 13, "Sonata Pathétique.”

Mr. Kim will perform on SAT / JAN 25 and SUN / JAN 26. He will bring his Beethoven expertise to the Saturday concert, in which he will perform three piano sonatas: No. 30, No. 31, and No. 32. On Sunday, Dasol will perform works by Schumann, Medtner, Scriabin, and Chopin. Get tickets here.
