Kenny Broberg makes Portland Piano International debut with three solo recitals in Portland and Beaverton, January 19–22

Kenny Broberg

PORTLAND, OR – American pianist Kenny Broberg, one of his generation's most decorated and internationally renowned pianists, will make his Portland debut in back-to-back recitals presented by Portland Piano International (PPI) at Lincoln Performance Hall, Portland State University, on January 21 and 22, 2023. Ilya Rashkovskiy, previously scheduled to perform on these dates, had to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances.

Broberg — named one of PPI's 2022–23 Rising Stars last fall — will also perform a preview recital at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton on January 19. This hourlong performance, without intermission, offers audiences a taste of the inventive, intelligent, and intense artistry he'll bring to the full-length recitals in Portland.

A silver medal at the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and a bronze medal at the 2019 International Tchaikovsky Competition are just two of the many accolades Broberg has received in his young career. Most recently, he was named winner of the 2021 American Pianist Awards and the Christel DeHaan Classical Fellowship — two prizes that have paved the way for Broberg's first studio album on the Steinway & Sons label, as well as two years of professional development and assistance with performance opportunities worldwide.

Broberg has performed in concert halls across Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, and has worked with some of the world's most respected conductors — including Ludovic Morlot, Kent Nagano, Leonard Slatkin, Vasily Petrenko, and Gerard Schwarz. Among the orchestras Broberg has appeared as soloist are London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Minnesota, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Sydney, Seattle, and Fort Worth Symphonies.

THE 2022 / 2023 SOLO PIANO SERIES

Curated by Vladimir Feltsman, PPI's 2022 / 2023 season of intimate piano recitals brings world-class artists to Portland for inspiring performances of treasured works and adventuresome new music.

Upcoming concerts this season include the following:

  • Daria Rabotkina (March 23, 25 & 26)

  • Roman Rabinovich (May 6 & 7)

  • Alexander Korsantia (June 3 & 4)

On curating PPI's new season, Mr. Feltsman commented: "When I was originally asked to curate this season for PPI [for the canceled 2020 / 2021 season], I agreed immediately because I saw this as an opportunity to introduce a new generation of pianists to a discriminating and supportive audience. Two years after their initial acquaintance with PPI, they are so excited to be coming finally to Portland.

"I'm very proud to have been asked to play this role with this fine organization, and I sincerely hope that my choices for the 2022/2023 season will bring us all delight, encouragement, and much needed reassurance in uncharted times."

Tickets for Mr. Broberg's Portland concerts on January 21 and 22 are available now at portlandpiano.org, where other details may be found — including the complete season, programs, and subscription options. Tickets for The Reser recital on January 19 are available now at thereser.org.

The concerts on January 21 and 22 will take place on the campus of Portland State University. For COVID-19 protocols, please refer to this link: portlandpiano.org/covid-guidelines.

PORTLAND PIANO INTERNATIONAL has presented more than 180 artists in recital and through outreach activities. Some of the greatest pianists in the world of music have played for Portland audiences because of this organization. While pianists have many opportunities to play the concerto repertoire, this is one of only a handful of recital series that remains devoted to the solo piano recital. Portland Piano International is a vital part of Portland’s quality cultural life and it has consistently garnered praise from both the local and national media, heralded a “consistently brilliant Piano Recital Series” (Willamette Week) and “one of this city’s musical treasures” (The Oregonian).
