Filippo Gorini

PORTLAND, OR — Italian pianist Filippo Gorini, a rising star whose musicianship has drawn unanimous acclaim from audiences across three continents, will make his return to Portland in recitals presented by Portland Piano International (PPI). As part of PPI's 2023 / 2024 Main Recital Series, Gorini will perform on January 7 at Portland State University's Lincoln Performance Hall, followed by a performance at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton on January 9.

Praised for his "wonderfully luminous" playing (Gramophone) and a performance style "exploding with pure joie de vivre" (BBC Music Magazine), Gorini has presented solo recitals in many of classical music's leading venues, including the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Berlin Konzerthaus, Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Zurich Tonhalle. As a concerto soloist, he's shared the stage with orchestras such as the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome, the Salzburg Mozarteum Orchester, the Verdi Orchestra in Milan, and the Gyeonggi Philharmonic in Seoul.

Mixing traditional performance opportunities and innovative approaches to digital storytelling, Gorini is actively redefining how classical musicians connect with today's music lovers. His multiyear project The Art of Fugue Explained offers fresh perspectives on the music of J. S. Bach through filmed conversations with Peter Sellars, Frank Gehry, Alfred Brendel, and many more. And over the course of the 2025–26 season, he will present Sonata for 7 Cities, which aims to show an ethical approach to concert life through month-long residencies centered around performances, outreach, teaching, and philanthropy.

Gorini is the recipient of the 2022 "Premio Abbiati," the most prestigious musical recognition in Italy, as well as the 2020 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and First Prize at the 2015 Telekom-Beethoven Competition. His three albums on Alpha Classics, featuring late works by Beethoven and Bach, have garnered critical acclaim — including a Diapason d'Or and five-star reviews in The Guardian, BBC Music Magazine, and Le Monde.

One of PPI's Rising Stars during the 2019–2020 season, Mr. Gorini's 2024 recitals mark his first appearance on PPI's Main Recital Series. His programs are as follows.

The 2023 / 2024 Main Recital Series

Curated by Boris Giltburg, PPI's 2023 / 2024 season of intimate piano recitals brings today's finest pianists to Portland for inspiring performances of treasured works and adventuresome new music.

Upcoming concerts this season include the following:

  • Michelle Cann (February 4 & 6)*

  • Eric Lu (May 5 & 7)*

* Denotes PPI debut

On curating PPI's new season, Mr. Giltburg commented:

"There are cities, venues, and concert series which stay in your heart long after your visit as a performer. Even when exact memories become flashbacks, a sense of great warmth remains, and a smile comes easily at the thought of eventually going back. Such for me is the Portland Piano International series. You can then imagine my excitement when I was approached and asked not just to return to the series, but to serve as your Guest Artistic Curator for the 2023 / 2024 season!

"Two traits unite all the pianists in our series this year: they are all poets of the keyboard in their unique way, and they all possess a wonderfully rich imagination. Brilliant or lyrical, their playing is always luminous and nuanced, clearly concerned with capturing shades of human emotions and sharing them with the audience."

PORTLAND PIANO INTERNATIONAL has presented more than 220 artists in recital and through outreach activities. Some of the greatest pianists in the world of music have played for Portland audiences because of this organization. While pianists have many opportunities to play the concerto repertoire, this is one of only a handful of recital series that remains devoted to the solo piano recital. Portland Piano International is a vital part of Portland's quality cultural life and it has consistently garnered praise from both the local and national media, heralded a "consistently brilliant Piano Recital Series" (Willamette Week) and "one of this city's musical treasures" (The Oregonian).
