Angela Hewitt Returns to Portland Piano International for an Unmissable Recital
PORTLAND, OR — Portland Piano International proudly welcomes back Angela Hewitt—one of the world’s most revered pianists—for an afternoon of unparalleled artistry. Hewitt’s crystalline clarity, poetic phrasing, and profound musical insight have captivated audiences from Carnegie Hall to La Fenice. On April 20, Portland audiences will have the rare opportunity to experience her artistry in an intimate recital setting at the Newmark Theatre.
Renowned as one of the greatest interpreters of Bach’s keyboard works, Hewitt brings a program that bridges Baroque elegance with Romantic brilliance. Handel’s Suite No. 2 in F Major, HWV 427, opens the recital with regal grandeur, followed by Bach’s French Suite No. 6 in E Major, BWV 817, where elegance and dance intertwine. Haydn’s Sonata in E-flat Major, Hob. XVI: 52, dazzles with contrasts—fiery virtuosity balanced by intimate lyricism. Returning to Handel, Hewitt performs the Chaconne in G Major, HWV 435, a hypnotic exploration of variation. The program culminates with Brahms’s Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, op. 24, a breathtaking display of invention and power.
“Angela Hewitt is an artist of rare distinction. Her deep affinity for Bach and her ability to illuminate every nuance of the score make each performance an extraordinary experience,” says Bill Crane, Executive Director of Portland Piano International. “We are honored to welcome her back to Portland.”
A celebrated recording artist, Hewitt’s award-winning cycle of all the major keyboard works by Bach has been hailed as “one of the record glories of our age” (The Sunday Times). She has earned four Juno Awards, a Gramophone Award, and the Wigmore Hall Gold Medal. Among the few women to have recorded the complete Beethoven Sonatas, she is also the visionary behind Italy’s Trasimeno Music Festival, where she curates transformative musical experiences and nurtures the next generation of pianists.
This recital is more than a concert—it is an invitation to witness one of the most distinguished pianists of our time at the height of her powers. Whether you are a devoted classical music enthusiast or new to the world of piano recitals, Hewitt’s artistry promises an afternoon of inspiration and discovery.

PORTLAND PIANO INTERNATIONAL has presented more than 220 artists in recital and through outreach activities. Some of the greatest pianists in the world of music have played for Portland audiences because of this organization. While pianists have many opportunities to play the concerto repertoire, this is one of only a handful of recital series that remains devoted to the solo piano recital. Portland Piano International is a vital part of Portland's quality cultural life and it has consistently garnered praise from both the local and national media, heralded a "consistently brilliant Piano Recital Series" (Willamette Week) and "one of this city's musical treasures" (The Oregonian).
