Renowned pianist Vladimir Feltsman returns to Portland Piano International for three concerts and an open master class, October 6-9

Vladimir Feltsman

PORTLAND, OR – Vladimir Feltsman, a major pianist on the American and international scene for nearly four decades, makes his long-awaited return to Portland for two back-to-back concerts presented by Portland Piano International (PPI) at Lincoln Performance Hall, Portland State University, on October 8 and 9, 2022.

Ahead of his Lincoln Hall recitals — the first in PPI's 2022 / 2023 SOLO Piano Series — Mr. Felstman will perform an hourlong preview recital at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton on October 6, followed by a Beyond the Score session on October 7, in which the esteemed educator will give an open master class at Portland Piano Company.

Mr. Feltsman is PPI’s Guest Artistic Curator for the 2022 / 2023 season, a role held by a globally renowned pianist each concert season. Hailed as "one of those rare musicians who seems able to tackle almost any repertoire" (Chicago Classical Review), Feltsman has astounded audiences across the globe with his superlative performances of music from the Baroque to the 21st century.

Career highlights have included a presentation of J.S. Bach's major keyboard works over the course of four consecutive seasons at New York's 92nd Street Y, a panoramic exploration of Russian contemporary music — from Shostakovich to the present day — with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and performances of all of Mozart's piano sonatas at the Mannes College of Music in New York City.

Mr. Feltsman holds the Distinguished Chair of Professor of Piano at the State University of New York, New Paltz, and is a member of the piano faculty at Mannes. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of the International Festival-Institute, PianoSummer at New Paltz, and in 2012 co-founded with his wife, Haewon Feltsman, the Feltsman Piano Foundation, which helps young musicians to realize their potential and advance their careers.

Mr. Feltsman's extensive discography encompasses more than 60 albums, including the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach, the complete Schubert sonatas, and major works of Beethoven, Schumann, Chopin, and Brahms. He is also the author of Piano Lessons (2019), a collection of personal insights drawn from a lifetime of devotion to music.

THE 2022 / 2023 SOLO PIANO SERIES

PPI’s new season of intimate piano recitals brings world-class artists to Portland for inspiring performances of treasured works and adventuresome new music.

Upcoming concerts this season include the following:

  • Vladimir Feltsman (October 7 & 8)

  • Ilya Yakushev (December 3 & 4)

  • Ilya Rashkovskiy (January 21 & 22)

  • Daria Rabotkina (March 25 & 26)

  • Roman Rabinovich (May 6 & 7)

  • Alexander Korsantia (June 3 & 4)

On curating PPI's new season, Mr. Feltsman commented: "When I was originally asked to curate this season for PPI [for the canceled 2020 / 2021 season], I agreed immediately because I saw this as an opportunity to introduce a new generation of pianists to a discriminating and supportive audience. Two years after their initial acquaintance with PPI, they are so excited to be coming finally to Portland.

"I'm very proud to have been asked to play this role with this fine organization, and I sincerely hope that my choices for the 2022/2023 season will bring us all delight, encouragement, and much needed reassurance in uncharted times."

PORTLAND PIANO INTERNATIONAL has presented more than 180 artists in recital and through outreach activities. Some of the greatest pianists in the world of music have played for Portland audiences because of this organization. While pianists have many opportunities to play the concerto repertoire, this is one of only a handful of recital series that remains devoted to the solo piano recital. Portland Piano International is a vital part of Portland’s quality cultural life and it has consistently garnered praise from both the local and national media, heralded a “consistently brilliant Piano Recital Series” (Willamette Week) and “one of this city’s musical treasures” (The Oregonian).
