Executive Director
bill@portlandpiano.orgBill Crane, Executive Director, stepped into the lead role at PPI in 2020 from his earlier position with the company as Director of Audience Engagement. A PPI subscriber for 31 years and a board member for nine years in the 1990s, Bill is himself a pianist and musicologist, educated at Florida State University and the Schola Cantorum, a private conservatory in Paris, France. Since moving to Portland in 1990, he has held several positions in fund development and executive leadership for area nonprofit organizations. He has taught piano, organ, and voice for more than 50 years, although he does not maintain an active studio currently, and continues a moderately active life as a recitalist.
“This is the job I’ve been preparing for my whole life. I have fun every day at the office! It’s delightful to get to connect people with the wonderful world of the piano.”
In his (scarce) spare time, he is a volunteer with the Trauma Intervention Program of Portland/Vancouver and an avid visual artist, working mostly in textiles.

Associate Director
robin@portlandpiano.orgRobin Power, associate director, has been with Portland Piano International since 2009, where she is the primary ticketing contact, dean of the Tholen Fellowship, and series event coordinator. Beginning her journey with the piano at age seven, she has 25 years of studio piano teaching experience as well as a B.A. degree in The Fine Arts from Western Oregon University and a M.S. Degree in Music Teaching from Portland State University. Since 2011 she has also served as state office staff for the Oregon Music Teachers Association.
“Being employed by both PPI and OMTA is like a dream come true. I am so thrilled to be able to continue my support of music, piano performance, and piano teaching in Oregon by working in these two fine organizations.”
In her spare time, Robin likes to read, keep fit by walking and working out, and practicing the piano and dulcimer for pleasure. She has two wonderful children and two amazing grandchildren, all involved in some way with artistic endeavors.

Operations Director
amelia@portlandpiano.orgAmelia de Vaal, who has always thought it providential that she learned how to read words and musical notation in the very same year, has dreamed of marrying her love for words with her passion for the piano for as long as she can remember. She double-majored in Journalism and European Languages at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, spent six months in Utrecht, the Netherlands as part of her Masters’ program, and by sheer chance (and a morning spent at Powell’s Books), fell in love with Portland, Oregon. Coming from a successful career in publishing, where she distinguished herself as a highly-skilled translator, editor and manuscript developer, she started volunteering at PPI in 2022, researching and writing program notes and presenting pre-concert lectures. Her voracious appetite for stories, strong command of written and spoken Dutch, high reading-level of German and French and boundless curiosity about people bring multicultural insight and a broad lens to her perspectives on classical music. She joined PPI fulltime as Operations Director in 2025.
“I honestly believe that the way to understanding everything is understanding the stories behind what we hear and see. Music teaches us to listen. It’s the one truly universal language – and we need it now, more than ever before!”
When not listening to a podcast, reading, writing, or playing the piano, Amelia loves spending time with her husband and two daughters (also keen amateur musicians). She is an avid and fast walker (usually accompanied by her Jack Russell terrier), dreams of further improving her sewing and knitting skills, and hopes to one day add Greek to her list of mastered languages.
