Although best known as a performer, renowned pianist Marc-André Hamelin has composed music throughout his award-winning career.
In addition to 12 Études in All the Minor Keys (1986-2009), Con Intimissimo Sentimento (1986-2000), and Theme and Variations (Cathy’s Variations) (2007), Mr. Hamelin has transcribed Zequinha de Abreu's Tico-Tico No Fubá, along with many other pieces. The majority of his works are published by Edition Peters.
One special work is Toccata on L'homme armé (2016). Commissioned for the 2017 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition by The Cliburn with support from the National Endowment for the Arts, this work was performed by each of the 30 contestants in Fort Worth. It is based on a song from the French Renaissance that is the basis for several Masses. Mr. Hamelin was a distinguished member of the jury of the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017, and this work marked the first time the composer of the commissioned work was also a member of the jury.
