THOLEN FELLOWS FAQ
What area do you consider to be "Central" Oregon?
We have defined those areas as the following counties: Crook, Deschutes, Jefferson and Wheeler. If you consider yourself to live in Central Oregon, but not in these counties, please let us know and we will be happy to discuss this with you!
What area do you consider to be in "North Coast" Oregon?
We have defined those areas as the following counties: Clatsop, Columbia and Tillamook. If you consider yourself to live in North Coast Oregon, but not in these counties, please let us know and we will be happy to discuss this with you!
Do I have to be a member of an association to apply?
No. Even if you aren't a member of the OMTA, OFMC or other music education associations, we would be happy to consider your application. Those groups do good work, though, so you should also check them out!
How are the Tholen Fellows selected?
We work to accommodate as many Tholen Fellows applicants as possible; most applicants are selected. Simply put, successful Tholen Fellows are teachers who are passionate about piano music and teaching! We seek those interested in improving their own abilities as musicians as a means of empowering them to take their teaching to the next level.
Do I have to participate for two years?
Yes. This is a two-year program and we expect that you will participate in all six sessions. In rare cases (illness, an unexpected move from Oregon, etc.), we have sought replacements for Fellows that have needed to discontinue their participation. This is an investment for everyone involved - you, the Clinicians, our funder - and we want you to have the most benefit possible from the experience!
What if I'm not an experienced teacher or don't have a lot of students at the higher syllabus levels?
We ask those questions on the form mostly to understand your experience and the level you are teaching. Your application will be shared with the Clinicians so that they can help you achieve the goals that you set for yourself. These are not things that qualify or disqualify you from being a Tholen Fellow.
Where will the Tholen Fellows sessions be held?
Fellows will study with the Clinician in Portland or will meet the Clinicians in a central location in the region. Lodging and a travel stipend will be provided while in Portland.
I'd love to participate, but I can't afford to cancel lessons with my students. When will the sessions be held?
We will hold these sessions - starting in March 2018! - at times that are generally holidays for students (Spring Break, summer, etc.). When that isn't possible, we hope that Fellows will be able to re-schedule their lessons. We are also offering Fellows some reimbursement for missed teaching time when re-scheduling isn't feasible.
