OMTA Guest Artist: Leila Viss
Leila Viss is a pianist, organist and owner of a private piano studio near Denver, Colorado. Viss is drawn to discovering innovative teaching tools and successful practice strategies to encourage the average player to stick to the bench for a lifetime. Customizing lessons to suit each student is a priority and therefore, she offers blended, tech-savvy instruction in classical, jazz, pop improvisation and composition. Every student not only has a private lesson but "Off-Bench Time" as well which features assignments and activities using the latest iPad apps, a Clavinova and more.
She holds a church organist/pianist position, blogs at88pianokeys.me, writes for Clavier Companion and authored Ipad Piano Studio: Keys to Unlocking the Power of Apps. Along with her co-publisher, Tom Folenta, Leila is developing the mttcampus.com to provide a central hub and support for teachers who wish to integrate technology into their teaching.
With Bradley Sowash, renowned jazz artist and educator, she is co-founder of 88 Creative Keys, a camp promoting creativity at the keys for students, adults and teachers.
JoyTunes, an internationally recognized and award-winning app developer team, invited Leila to serve on their Musical Advisory Board.
Leila has helped with planning the 2013, 2014 Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) “Jazz/Pop” Tracks and serves as chair of the Creative Pianist track for the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy. In 2014 with Dr. Sam Holland, she designed a unique conference for piano teachers at Southern Methodist University based on creativity and teaching creatively. Leila presents frequently at the local, state and national levels sharing her imaginative approach to teaching with technology.
She is regularly asked to adjudicate piano and composition competitions.
